Game Recap

Keyshawn Woods was sensational in his second game with the Deacs.

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons utilized excellent perimeter shooting to defeat the Bucknell Bison, 94-74. Keyshawn Woods scored 22 points and was one of 5 Deacons to score in double-figures What else stood out in this contest?

Wake Forest started off red hot from beyond the arc and really used the perimeter shot to blow this game open and sustain the lead. Wake Forest, who made just 5 of 18 3’s in Friday’s game against Radford, drained 13 of 26 attempts against the Bison.

Danny Manning has said this is by far is best shooting team, and he’s 100% accurate in that statement. Keyshawn Woods made 5 of 6 from deep, while graduate transfer Austin Arians made 3 of 6, Dinos Mitoglou made 2 of 5, and Mitchell Wilbekin was 3-4. Wake’s outside shooting will absolutely keep them in games this season, and the offense is very fun to watch. It’s much more fluid, as the players on the perimeter are more skilled and versatile than in previous years. Woods is not just a scorer, and he can also put it on the floor and finish at the hoop. He was such a critical recruiting win by Manning and company.

Wake Forest was led on the inside by John Collins. I mean, did we possibly expect anyone else? He struggled early on from the field, but really stepped up nicely at the charity stripe (11-14). He finished with 19 points and also grabbed 9 rebounds. He asserted his dominance in the second half, and it was exciting to see. He is going to have an outstanding sophomore campaign, but he does need to work on not bringing the ball down on offense.

The Deacs won the rebounding battle 40-32, but at times late in the first half they fell asleep on the defensive glass and allowed Bucknell to generate second chance points. Bucknell was led by Zach Thomas, who finished with 15 minutes. He created some matchup problems, as he was able to make outside shots and stretch our bigs who were defending him. Some of those matchups could be problematic later in the season, but Wake is an improved defensive team at both rebounding as well as defensive rotations.

FINAL STATS

I’m excited to see what this team can do this season, because the three ball is a great equalizer. Wake really spaces the floor and can run a lot of spread action that utilizes pick-and-roll as well as pick-and-pop and dribble hand offs.

Bucknell will host Robert Morris on Wednesday, while Wake Forest will play UTEP on Thursday in the 1st round of the Gildan Charleston Classic.
