Inside the dome, the Pitt Panthers came out with a 30-13 win over the Syracuse Orange. Pitt's offense struggled to move the ball against Syracuse, but a 66-yard punt return touchdown by Kenny Johnson just before halftime proved to be a huge play. Syracuse never got within 10 after that. The Pitt defense had two sacks, eight tackles for loss, and three interceptions. Quarterback Mason Heintschel completed 13 of 24 passes for 143 yards and ran for 23 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. The Syracuse defense had seven sacks, 12 tackles for loss, and an interception. Quarterback Richie Collins threw for 126 yards and two touchdowns on 16-23 passing. Collins also ran for 37 yards on 10 carries.

Pitt's freshman quarterback, Mason Heintschel, had a magnificent game and completed 21-29 passes for 321 passing yards with 2 touchdowns while overcoming two 1st-half interceptions in the win. Heintschel also led the team with 64 rushing yards while Desmond Reid caught 8 passes for 155 receiving yards, adding 45 on the ground for Pat Narduzzi's squad.
