The Hokies bounced back from back-to-back close losses to defeat the Golden Bears, 78-75. Cal's Justin Pippen had an open shot at the buzzer to send the game to overtime, but it hit off the rim and bounced out. Six of the seven Hokies players who played in the game scored in double figures. Amani Hansberry led Virginia Tech with 15 points and nine rebounds. Tobi Lawal had 10 points and seven rebounds. For Cal, Dai Dai Ames scored a game-high 21 points on 8-12 shooting with two assists.
