Wake QB Sam Hartman Out For Regular Season with Leg Injury

The true freshman will miss the final three games of the season after sustaining an injury yesterday in the loss to Syracuse.

As first reported and scooped by Les Johns at Demon Deacon Digest, true freshman quarterback Sam Hartman will miss the rest of the season after sustaining an injury to his right leg/foot in the 41-24 loss to Syracuse yesterday.

This is another massive injury in what has been an unbelievably bad year health-wise for the Deacs.

Hartman finishes his first season in Winston-Salem with 16 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, and 1,984 yards in one of the best true freshman QB campaigns in school history.

In what has been about what you would expect from a QB starting in his first year, Hartman had his ups-and-downs throughout the season. He developed well and continued to work on making better decisions as he learned the offense and got used to the speed of collegiate football.

Now all eyes turn to the other two quarterback options on the roster, and those who clamored for another QB in the game yesterday (and in the past) will get their wish when either Jamie Newman or Kendall Hinton takes over the offense.

Newman is 7-15 on the season for 75 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. He also has run for 70 yards on 12 attempts.

Hinton is 2-8 for two yards, no touchdowns and an interception. He did not play yesterday and has a tumultuous season with suspensions and injuries hampering his ability to get on the field.

I have no idea who will wind up starting on Thursday night in Raleigh, but if I had to guess I would say it will be Newman even though Hinton was listed as the backup QB on the depth chart this week.

As head coach Dave Clawson went over yesterday in his press conference, the fact that Wake has to turn around and play another football team in five days (for the second time this season) will cut into practice time that is sorely needed now more than ever.

Things were already looking bleak for the Deacs in the final three games of the season, but now Hartman won’t even get to continue to develop and get reps in games as he rehabs his injury.

Make no mistake, this is a huge blow to Wake and limits even further the odds of making its third straight bowl game. The Deacs need to go 2-1 in its final three games to get to six wins.

We will keep you updated on any developments as far as who will likely be the QB moving forward when it comes out.

All thoughts and wishes are to Sam from Blogger So Dear and we hope to see him come back stronger and healthy for next year to lead the team.
