Devin Thomas Deserved to Make an All-ACC Team

A case for the senior.

On Sunday, the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association announced the 2015-2016 All-ACC teams. For the most part, I thought the media did an excellent job, but there was one glaring omission - Devin Thomas. Yes, the senior from Wake Forest was named an honorable mention, but he deserved more.

Devin Thomas averaged 15.7 points and 10.1 rebounds per contest, while shooting 55% from the field, and blocking 1.5 shots per game. Yes, I fully acknowledge that Devin Thomas had several things working against him. He was suspended for two games due to a violation of athletic department rules, he typically has a poor attitude, and his team won just 2 out of 18 games in ACC play. Hell, he didn't even play in one of the team's two ACC wins (a 74-48 romp over Boston College). But to vote in Angel Rodriguez over him? Devin Thomas was 14th in the conference in scoring, 3rd in rebounding, 5th in blocks, and 8th in field goal percentage.

Angel Rodriguez inexplicably received three, yes three, votes for first team All-ACC. In what universe does Rodriguez deserve three first team votes. He had a nice season (11.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game), but he was a very poor shooter. He's only on this team because of Miami's strong performance, and somehow he's in over Tonye Jekiri.

Devin Thomas was a nightmare for opposing teams all season. They consistently game planned specifically for him, and he frequently saw double teams. Despite all of this, and lack of consistent perimeter shooters around him, he was a menace. His post moves were excellent for the most part, and could score against anyone.

I don't believe in giving awards to players just based on body of work. This aware was for the 2015-2016 season, and Devin Thomas did more than enough this season to prove his worth. He deserved a spot on at least the third team, but the voters got it wrong.
