What If Tarik Skubal is Traded at the Trade Deadline? We Simulated His Potential Landing Spots

With the August 3 trade deadline days away, Tarik Skubal remains the biggest name on the board — a two-time Cy Young ace on an expiring deal, and a pitcher who can flip a contender’s October outlook overnight. Detroit is still deciding whether to deal him, but the asking price is clear: a young, MLB-ready starter plus multiple prospects.

We used MyGameSim What If rosters to put Skubal on six of the most-mentioned landing spots and measured what happens when he starts versus each club’s average rotation. Same opponent. Same park conditions. Only the starter changed.

We ran both versions through the MyGameSim MLB Game Simulator: 50 games per condition, home vs. Cleveland, home-field advantage on. Check today’s board on MLB Predictions.

The Setup

  • Baseline: current 2026 roster, no pitcher forced (model samples the average starting staff)
  • With Skubal: What If roster adding Tarik Skubal from Detroit, locked in as the starter
  • Destinations: Braves, Phillies, Dodgers, Yankees, Cubs, Rays
  • Benchmark: 2026 Cleveland Guardians (common mid-pack AL offense)
  • Simulations: 50 per condition, home-field advantage on, injuries ignored

The Results

Team Baseline + Skubal Δ Win% Δ Runs Allowed
Atlanta Braves 4.62–4.38 (46%) 4.58–2.92 (76%) +30 −1.46
Philadelphia Phillies 4.10–4.58 (48%) 4.38–3.08 (70%) +22 −1.50
Los Angeles Dodgers 5.72–3.02 (72%) 4.56–2.46 (74%) +2 −0.56
New York Yankees 4.40–2.74 (74%) 4.44–3.14 (76%) +2 +0.40
Chicago Cubs 5.46–3.42 (74%) 4.50–3.16 (72%) −2 −0.26
Tampa Bay Rays 5.40–4.16 (66%) 4.30–3.40 (58%) −8 −0.76
SIM VERDICT
Biggest lift: Braves & Phillies.
ATL +30 win pts  |  PHI +22 win pts  |  Best RA: Dodgers + Skubal (2.46)

The pattern is clear. Clubs with weaker baselines against Cleveland get transformed. Clubs that already crush with their average staff mostly hit a ceiling — Skubal still helps the pitching line, but win% barely moves.

Scenario 1: Braves — Biggest Needle Move

Atlanta jumps from a 46% win rate to 76% with Skubal on the mound — a +30-point swing, the largest in our sample. Runs allowed drop from 4.38 to 2.92 per game.

That tracks with the rumor mill. The Braves have been linked as a primary suitor, and pairing Skubal with Chris Sale would give Atlanta the most terrifying short-series 1-2 punch in the National League. Detroit’s reported ask (a controllable arm such as JR Ritchie or AJ Smith-Shawver plus prospects) is steep, but the sim says the on-field payoff is massive.

Scenario 2: Phillies — Nearly as Loud

Philadelphia goes from 48% to 70% (+22 points) and posts the best pure pitching improvement: −1.50 runs allowed per game. Baseline Philly was the only club in our set allowing more runs than it scored against Cleveland; Skubal flips the script immediately.

A package built around Andrew Painter has been floated as a Detroit-friendly framework. Whether Philly’s farm can clear the full asking price is the open question — the sim impact is not.

Scenario 3: Dodgers — Ceiling Already High

Los Angeles only gains +2 win percentage points (72% → 74%), but that’s a ceiling effect: the Dodgers already crush CLE with their current staff. What Skubal does change is the pitching line — he posts the lowest runs allowed of any Skubal sample at 2.46 RPG.

Rival evaluators still see L.A. as the cleanest trade fit (Emmet Sheehan or Justin Wrobleski as the MLB-ready backfill, plus top prospects). The Dodgers don’t need Skubal to be favorites. They need him to shorten October.

Scenario 4: Yankees — Marginal Lift, Strong Baseline

New York sits at 74% without Skubal and 76% with him. The win% bump is small; sample noise even has runs allowed tick up slightly. Like the Dodgers, this is a team whose average starter already wins at a high clip against this opponent — Skubal is insurance and October separation more than a regular-season transformation.

Scenario 5: Cubs — Need Is Real, Lift Is Flat Here

Chicago’s baseline was already excellent (74%). Forcing Skubal every start produced a wash on win% (−2) and only a modest −0.26 RA improvement. The Cubs may have the most acute rotation need in real life due to injuries — but against this specific opponent, their staff was already rolling. A deeper multi-opponent study would tell a fuller story.

Scenario 6: Rays — Don’t Overread the Win%

Tampa Bay’s win rate dipped in this 50-game sample (−8 points), but Skubal still cut runs allowed by 0.76 per game. With n=50, win% variance is real — especially for a club already winning two-thirds of the time. The Rays remain one of the most logical AL buyers (best record, deep farm), and Ian Seymour has been named as a possible Detroit backfill piece.

What Detroit Wants

Per reporting around the deadline, the Tigers won’t move Skubal without:

  • A young, MLB-ready starting pitcher to backfill the rotation this year
  • Multiple prospects on top of that arm

ESPN still puts the chance of a deal around 60%, even as Detroit’s recent surge has some executives leaning toward a hold. If they deal him, they’re trying to stay competitive now and restock for 2027 free agency.

What It Means

The bigger takeaway is impact vs. ceiling:

  • Biggest impact: Braves and Phillies — double-digit win% lifts and ~1.5 fewer runs allowed when Skubal starts.
  • Already-built staffs: Dodgers, Yankees, and Cubs gain the least on win% because their baselines are already elite — Skubal is an October upgrade more than a standings flip.
  • Watch runs allowed: it’s the cleanest pitcher-impact measure in this design. By that metric, Philly (−1.50), Atlanta (−1.46), and Tampa Bay (−0.76) see the clearest mound improvement.
