Syracuse, N.Y. — The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team got its first win of the season on Wednesday night, beating the Colgate Raiders 70-54.

Coach Jim Boeheim kept the same starting lineup from last week’s loss to Virginia: Jalen Carey, Buddy Boeheim, Elijah Hughes, Marek Dolezaj, and Bourama Sidibe.

Also like last week, the Orange started the game cold on offense. Syracuse missed its first eight shots while Colgate built a 9-1 lead with three three-pointers. SU’s lone point came on a free throw by Carey, who struggled on offense in the first half with turnovers and blocked shots and was replaced by Joe Girard III at the 14:22 mark.

Sidibe scored SU’s first field goal inside at 13:53 off a feed from Dolezaj, and after three-pointers on back-to-back possessions by Buddy Boeheim, the Orange entered the second media timeout tied at 11 with 11:04 left.

Syracuse’s first-half scoring came primarily from Boeheim (10 points), Sidibe (8 points, including 4-4 from the field), and Hughes (7 points). As a team, the Orange shot 12-28 (42.9 percent) from the field and 3-8 (37.5 percent) from three-point range. The Raiders’ attack was much more balanced, with seven players in the scoring column. They shot 9-28 from the field (33.3 percent) and 6-21 (30 percent) from the three-point line. The Orange led 22-13 in rebounding, while both teams committed seven turnovers.

Both teams traded leads for the rest of the half, and the Orange entered the break up 31-25.

After Dolezaj scored the first two points of the second half at the rim, the Orange followed with some electrifying plays. Dolezaj scored on a spin and dunk in transition to get SU’s first double-digit lead of the game at 35-25 with 18:23 left, although Colgate responded with a three-pointer on the other end. Two minutes later, Girard hit a three-pointer off the dribble, and then threw an alley-oop to Sidibe in transition on the next possession to put the Orange up 41-28 with 16:18 left.

The Orange also held Colgate scoreless between three-pointers at the 17:57 and 11:58 marks.

Following a scoring flurry led by Boeheim and Hughes, Syracuse extended its lead to 58-34 with 7:33 left. Despite Colgate’s Jordan Burns hitting several three-pointers the rest of the game, the Orange got enough scoring from their bench, including an and-one runner by Howard Washington, to coast to a victory.

Final Stats

The Orange shot 28-55 (50.9 percent) from the field and 7-17 (41.2 percent) from three-point range. Boeheim was the leading scorer with 17 points on 7-14 shooting, followed by Hughes with 14 (5-11) and Bourama Sidibe (6-6). Sidibe also recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds. Colgate shot 18-60 (30 percent) from the field and 13-41 (31.7 percent) from three.

Jordan Burns led Colgate with 12 points on 4-12 shooting. The Orange outrebounded the Raiders 42-31, and committed 14 turnovers to Colgate’s 15.
