According to Shelton Mitchell, Wake Forest granted him with a release from his scholarship. Mitchell, the sixth best player in the state of North Carolina for the Class of 2014 according to ESPN, is reportedly still considering Wake and loves the university but "wants to make sure [he] makes the right decision." Mitchell was recruited by former Wake Forest head coach Jeff Bzdelik who stepped down as the Demon Deacon head coach after four years with the program.

Mitchell is set to graduate from Oak Hill and is still working to get back to full-strength following a meniscus tear. Along with Wake, he received offers from Clemson, Illinois, Missouri, Mississippi State, and Virginia Tech in addition to several other schools. It is unclear if there are any terms to Mitchell's release, but it would not be uncommon for a school to set restrictions on where he could go - particularly if other ACC schools are still interested.

Mitchell was part of a two-man recruiting class alongside two-star shooting guard Rondale Watson. Isaac Haas, a Purdue signee, was previously committed to Wake Forest but did not sign a national letter of intent on signing day and ultimately switched his commitment to the Boilermakers.

Wake currently has three open scholarships for the upcoming season.
