Winning at home

After 3 straight cancellations, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Men’s Basketball team finally had an opponent in the Detroit Mercy Titans for its home opener. Former Indiana Hoosiers head coach, Mike Davis, brought in a Titan squad that gave the Michigan State Spartans a pretty good game — and this game stayed fairly tight as well.

The Irish played with just 7 players — including freshmen Tony Sanders Jr. and Matt Zona. All five starters finished with double digit points, with Prentiss Hubb leading the way with 18 points and 8 assists. Forward Nate Laszewski locked down a double double with 16 points of his own and 11 rebounds.

The Irish held Detroit to 38% from the field and 29% behind the three point line, and Juwan Durham shined with 4 blocks and 9 rebounds.

Brey got mostly what he wanted from his guys on the floor:

“We need five guys in double figures. Those starters have to get double figures and maybe we can get a guy off the bench to get to double figures and we’re into a nice offensive rhythm.”

No one came off the bench for double digits, but freshman Tony Sanders Jr. did score 5 points.

Notre Dame is scheduled to play the Ohio State Buckeyes on Tuesday.
