Game Recap

The Fighting Irish were led by TJ Gibbs, BONZIE COLSON, and Matt Farrell to a fantastic offensive performance against an overmatched Chicago State squad

The #14 Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s basketball team hosted the Chicago State Cougars at Purcell Pavilion this evening. The Irish continued their strong start to the season, blowing the Cougars out by a score of 105 to 66.

The Irish were led by sophomore guard T.J. Gibbs, who set a new career-high in points with 23 on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 shooting from deep.

BONZIE COLSON chipped in a somewhat typical 15 points and 9 rebounds (the atypical part being the just baaaaarely lack of a double-double), Matt Farrell had 18 points (including ANOTHER dunk that earned him an absolutely horrible technical foul for “hanging on the rim”), 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.

ND freshman DJ Harvey had another nice game as well, scoring 16 points while shooting 5-of-8 from the field. The Irish shot 62% from the field overall, 45.5% from 3, and made 23-of-30 free throws on the evening.

Various other guys got in on the scoring party as well for Notre Dame, as sophomore John Mooney scored 9 points (and had 5 rebounds), Rex Pflueger scored 7, Martinas Geben had 8, and even former walk-on (now scholarship senior) and fan-favorite Matt Gregory buried a 3 in the final minutes.

Chicago State was led by Fred Sims Jr. and Jelani Pruitt, who had 19 and 16 points, respectively. Deionte Simmons added 13 points, and the Cougars shot 36% from the field (37.5% from deep).

The Fighting Irish improve to 3-0 on the year, and now will head to Hawaii for next week’s Maui Invitational, where they will face Chaminade on Monday and then if they win that one, will play the winner of the Michigan Wolverines and LSU Tigers.

Other teams playing in the Maui Invitational include the #6 Wichita State Shockers, Marquette Golden Eagles, the Virginia Commonwealth Rams, and California Golden Bears.
