Canadiens to the Cup? The MyGameSim 2026-27 NHL Season Preview

Opening night is almost here. On Sept. 29 the league gets started again, and the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes will raise their second Stanley Cup banner before hosting the Florida Panthers in Raleigh. Carolina beat Vegas in six games in June to capture the Cup, and now everyone else has spent the summer trying to catch them.

We pulled projected 2026-27 rosters from our database, cross-checked the big offseason moves against ESPN's free-agency grades and preseason team questions, then ran hundreds of Game Sim matchups to project division races and a full playoff bracket. Here is how we see it.

The summer that reshaped the map

Brady Tkachuk wanted out of Ottawa. Florida said yes. Pairing Brady with Matthew Tkachuk, and getting Aleksander Barkov back healthy after a lost year, is the loudest reunion in the Atlantic. The Panthers also swapped crease philosophies, bringing in Jacob Markstrom after Sergei Bobrovsky signed in Toronto.

Washington refused to sit through another missed postseason. Jordan Kyrou came over from St. Louis, Alex Tuch arrived from Buffalo, and Boone Jenner signed to thicken the middle six. That Capitals group suddenly looks like a Metro problem for everyone, including the champs.

Elsewhere: Frederik Andersen left Carolina for Edmonton on a prove-it deal, John Carlson landed in Tampa after Darren Raddysh headed to Toronto, Quinn Hughes is in Minnesota next to Brock Faber, and Connor Hellebuyck's trade request still hangs over Winnipeg. Colorado mostly ran it back, then locked up Cale Makar on a record extension that will make him the first $20 million AAV defenseman when it kicks in.

On the betting board, ESPN's Stanley Cup futures have Carolina and Florida co-favorites at +650, with Colorado (+700), Edmonton (+800), and Vegas (+850) right behind. NHL.com's Dan Rosen went further and put Montreal first. Our simulator landed closer to Rosen than to the chalk.

Likely division winners

We simulated head-to-head series inside each division (40 games each, home ice on) using 2027 projected stats. Combined with projected point totals across full rosters, these are our picks.

Atlantic: Montreal Canadiens

Last spring Montreal pushed Carolina to the Eastern Conference Final. This summer they mostly kept the band together. Nick Suzuki projects for about 100 points in our model, Cole Caufield sits near 50 goals, and Lane Hutson keeps eating minutes on the blue line. In our sims, Montreal took 57.5 percent of games in Tampa and outscored the Lightning 4.20 to 3.25 on average. Tampa still looks dangerous with Kucherov, Guentzel, and Carlson, and Florida should bounce back hard with both Tkachuks. But the Canadiens feel like the team that finally turns "next year" into "this year."

Metropolitan: Carolina Hurricanes

Yes, Andersen is gone. Yes, Washington just spent like a franchise that got embarrassed. Our CAR-WSH sims were basically a coin flip (Capitals 52.5 percent on the road in Raleigh). Carolina still owns the style advantage under Rod Brind'Amour, Jaccob Slavin should be healthier from the jump, and the defending champs handled New Jersey in 65 percent of our sims. We have the Hurricanes winning the Metro again, with the Capitals as the first wild card and a real threat to steal home ice by April.

Central: Colorado Avalanche

Nathan MacKinnon projects for 131 points. Martin Necas is right behind him. Makar is Makar. Colorado edged Dallas in 55 percent of sims and split with Minnesota. The Wild with Hughes and a healthy Joel Eriksson Ek are legitimate Cup threats, and Dallas never goes quietly. Still, if you are picking one Central team to own April, you start in Denver.

Pacific: Vegas Golden Knights

Vegas just lost the Final and did not tear it down. Mitch Marner is still on Jack Eichel's wing in our projections (86 points), and the Knights slipped past Edmonton 52.5 percent of the time with home ice. The Oilers remain the nightmare bracket draw because McDavid (135 projected points) and Draisaitl do not care about September narratives. San Jose, led by Macklin Celebrini's 111-point projection, is the rising noise in the division, but not the favorite yet.

Projected playoff field

East: Montreal, Carolina, Tampa Bay, Washington, Florida, Buffalo, New Jersey, Ottawa
West: Colorado, Vegas, Minnesota, Edmonton, Dallas, Utah, San Jose, Anaheim

That bracket leans on last season's results, the offseason upgrades, and the division sims above. Then we put the eight-team-per-conference field into Game Sim and played it out.

Simulated Stanley Cup playoffs

Each series below is 50 simulated games (60 for the Final) with the higher seed getting home-ice advantage. Winner is whoever took more games.

First round

  • Canadiens over Devils (58%, avg 3.84-3.06)
  • Hurricanes over Sabres (56%, avg 3.24-2.82)
  • Lightning over Panthers (64%, avg 3.90-3.04)
  • Capitals over Senators (64%, avg 3.48-2.74)
  • Avalanche over Sharks (54%, avg 3.12-2.98)
  • Golden Knights over Mammoth (52%, avg 3.06-3.14)
  • Stars over Wild (Stars 52% as the road side, avg 3.08-3.00)
  • Oilers over Ducks (52%, avg 2.68-2.60)

Florida's rematch energy did not survive Tampa in the model. Minnesota's Hughes-powered defense lost a tight one to Dallas. Celebrini's Sharks made Colorado sweat, which feels about right for a young group that is done waiting politely.

Second round

  • Canadiens over Capitals (50%, razor thin)
  • Hurricanes over Lightning (60%, avg edge to Carolina)
  • Oilers over Avalanche (Oilers 54% on the road in Denver)
  • Stars over Golden Knights (Stars 56% as the visitor)

That Western half is chaos. Edmonton knocking out Colorado is the kind of result that will make Avalanche fans furious in May and Oilers fans act like they called it in September. Dallas ending Vegas's rematch tour is another reminder that regular-season swagger and playoff hockey are different sports.

Conference finals

  • East: Canadiens over Hurricanes (58% for Montreal at home, the reverse of last spring's ECF)
  • West: Oilers over Stars (50%, coin flip that tipped Edmonton)

Stanley Cup Final

Montreal Canadiens over Edmonton Oilers in 60 simulations: Canadiens won 56.7 percent, average score 3.52-3.07.

It is a heavyweight Final. McDavid and Draisaitl against Suzuki, Caufield, Hutson, and a Montreal group that already knows what a long spring feels like. Our engine gives the edge to the Habs' depth and structure at home, not because Edmonton suddenly forgot how to score.

The pick

Stanley Cup champion: Montreal Canadiens.

That lines up with Rosen's early list more than with the sportsbook chalk, and it matches what happened when we actually pressed simulate. Carolina remains the East's measuring stick. Colorado and Florida are absolutely capable of shredding this entire write-up by Groundhog Day. Vegas is still Vegas. But if you forced us to put a name on the Cup before puck drop, we are riding the Canadiens.

Want to poke holes in it? Run the matchups yourself on our NHL Game Simulator, or check nightly numbers on the NHL predictions board. Opening night is Sept. 29. The arguments start now.
