Game Recap

There wasn’t anyone that thought Mike Novell wasn’t walking into a major rebuild at Florida State. In the last three seasons Florida State football has an 18-20 record. That includes back to back to losing seasons in 2018 and 2019.

Tuesday’s 20-14 six turnover bowl loss to Arizona State just further is a microcosm of the current state Florida State football and it is not pretty.

Any lingering hopes for a quick turnaround went out the window with comedy of errors, disastrous quarterback play, and another 4th quarter collapse.

When Jimbo Fisher took over for Bobby Bowden in 2009, it took Jimbo Fisher 3 full seasons to get the Noles back into the top 10. Bowden’s last 3 teams won 2 bowl games, never had losing season, and even had 1 top 25 finish. Fisher didn’t have to deal with a monster in his own division like Clemson in his early years either.

Norvell inherits a far bigger mess.

The Seminoles offensive line has been mediocre at best for 3 years, and what is Norvell going to do at the QB position? Wake Forest’s Jamie Newman entered the transfer portal, and if I’m Mike Norvell I’m burning up his voicemail. He better hurry too, because word is that Newman is already looking Oregon. Current QB James Blackmon just seems overwhelmed at the position, and his nightmare 4 interception bowl game doesn’t inspire much hope in his future.

There is some talent on the team, and the return of DT Marvin Wilson and WR Tamorrian Terry should provide some good building blocks for next season.

What Scott Satterfield did at Louisville winning 8 games after the Cardinals infamous  2-10 2018 season, and Mack Brown’s 7-6 season after UNC won 5 games the previous two years combined proves in the ACC upward mobility is possible and quickly. A return to the top 10 is going to take awhile though.

Florida State shouldn’t be this bad under any circumstances. The ACC to be honest isn’t very good at the moment, and Florida has a ton of talent to recruit from.

It’s now Norvell’s task to try and fix the once proud program. Something Willie Taggart showed no signs of being able to do during his short tenure.
