Mike Brey and his revamped coaching staff have secured a nice big cornerstone for the very important 2022 recruiting class

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s basketball program got on the board for 2022 recruiting Wednesday evening, as top-150 big man Dom Campbell from Phillips Exeter Academy (New Hampshire) committed to Mike Brey and the squad.

This looks to be a solid start to a VERY important recruiting class for the future of the Irish program, as the 6’8”, 235-lb big man selected Notre Dame over the likes of Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Minnesota, Providence, Boston College, Stanford, Virginia Tech, and others.

Campbell, ranked #132 in his class by 247sports, plays for the Middlesex Magic, the same AAU team as former Notre Dame standout/captain and recent NBA Champion Pat Connaughton. And in watching his highlights, there’s certainly some shades of one of Connaughton’s former teammates, BONZIE Colson — Campbell certainly has a bit of an old-school style in the post and uses his long arms and strong body to his advantage.

The Maine native visited Notre Dame in June and loved his experience on campus. Thanks to that and to his connections to Connaughton, he said it just felt like the right place for him. Furthermore, it sounds like both Brey and assistant coach Ryan Humphrey did a great job building relationships with him, making him feel ND was the perfect program to help him develop his game and take things to the next level.

He comes in with very lofty personal goals, which may seem a bit far-fetched for an ND frosh, but you HAVE to love both his confidence and his ambition:

“I plan on playing as best as I can, I would like to win ACC Freshman of the Year, that would be a personal goal for me. As a team I want to win a national championship, and not just do well in the tournament but win. I’ll have big goals at Notre Dame and I know that my teammates will have the same goals and I hope that we can achieve them.”

The Irish coaching staff will certainly look to add at least a few more players to the 2022 class, considering the number of upperclassmen on the current roster and the light recruiting classes Brey and co. have signed the last couple years.

Brey noted recently that the Irish are scheduled to graduate 7 guys this season, and thus the revamped Irish coaching staff has been busy on the recruiting trail, attempting to woo players like J.J. Starling, Cam Whitmore, Desmond Claude, Alex Karaban, Denver Anglin, and more. Hopefully Campbell’s commitment can help convince some of those guys to come join him as the next generation of Brey Boys who will help turn things around over the next few years.

Either way, though, Campbell’s commitment is important on its own, especially for a program lacking a substantial number of talented big men. Welcome to Irish Nation, Dom, and we’re very excited to watch you play for the Blue and Gold in 2022 and beyond.
