2018 QB Sam Hartman Commits to Wake Forest

It's never too early to land highly regarded prospects.

Dave Clawson has clearly placed a heavy emphasis on recruiting quarterbacks while he has been at Wake Forest, and on Tuesday night the Wake Forest football program landed another one. Sam Hartman, a class of 2018 quarterback out of Davidson Day in North Carolina, has committed to play football at Wake Forest University. 247 Sports ranks him as the 12th best pro-style quarterback in the 2018 class.

Hartman, as just a sophomore, led his high school team to a state championship, and was also named first-team all-state. He played in 10 games on the season and completed 168 of 260 passing attempts (65%) for 2,655 yards, 24 touchdowns, and just 4 interceptions. He is an accurate passer, and keeps his head up long enough to see plays develop down the field. He has good arm strength for a sophomore, and that will only get stronger as he progresses throughout his career.

Quarterback depth should not be an issue moving forward. Wake Forest just received a verbal commitment from highly regarded 2017 QB Taylor Powell on Saturday night, and freshman Jamie Newman also has excellent credentials. I also believe in the talent of John Wolford and Kendall Hinton, so this will be a definite position of strength moving forward.

Hartman won't be on Wake's campus for some time, but it's becoming more and more important to land talented quarterbacks early on in the recruiting process. If Hartman's ranking holds, then Wake Forest just landed its best quarterback prospect in the history of the program.
