Game Recap

Wake’s incredible second half helped the Deacs finish the non-conference schedule in style.

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons led by just 5 points at halftime, but scored an incredible 67 points in the second half en route to a 110 to 76 victory over the LSU Tigers. Dinos Mitoglou was absolutely sensational, and finished with a career-high 28 points after draining 8 of 11 three point attempts. Wake finished the non-conference portion of the schedule at 9-3, while LSU fell to 8-3.

The Deacs came out strong at the start of both halves. Wake went up 10-0 just 3 minutes in to the contest, thanks to the star of the show, Dinos Mitoglou, draining two three’s. However, LSU would respond to make it 14-12 Wake Forest after Elbert Robinson III drained a pair of free throws. Wake pulled ahead later in the first half, but found themselves up by just five at half.

Wake’s strong start in the second half was a turning point in the game. The Deacs utilized a John Collins layup, Bryant Crawford three, Collins jumper, and Keyshawn Woods jumper to jump out to a quick 9-0 run in the second half. If it wasn’t over at that point, then it certainly was over after Dinos Mitoglou made three after three after three after three.

Dinos was so great tonight that I Googled what it would find out to receive dual Greece citizenship. He made just 28% of his shots from the outside entering tonight, but he more than made up for that on Thursday evening.

There really isn’t much else to say about this one other than when Wake Forest makes outside shots they can compete with anyone in the country. The Deacs made an incredible 62% of three point attempts and also outrebounded LSU by 7.

This was by far Wake Forest’s best performance of the non-conference season, and I was incredibly impressed after losing a disappointing game to Xavier on Saturday evening. I realize there is reason for hesitation, but I am very eager to see how Wake Forest performs when conference play begins.

Wake Forest will resume play on Wednesday, when they begin ACC play at Florida State. The action will begin at 5 p.m. What are your thoughts on the team?
