UNC Players' NCAA Tournament Experience

Heading into the NCAA Tournament, UNC has a team made up of primarily juniors and sophomore with three freshman and a couple of little used seniors. Here is how the roster stacks up in terms of previous NCAA Tournament experience.

Jackson Simmons leads the team in games played in the NCAA Tournament though one of those was less than a minute against Creighton in 2012.

Stilman White is fourth on the team in NCAA Tournament minutes per game played. White, as you recall, was pressed into starting point guard duties after Kendall Marshall broke his wrist against Creighton in 2012. That leads to White being the team's current leader in assists per game in NCAA Tournament play.

On the current roster there are two players who have had solid NCAA Tournament outings so far in their career. Marcus Paige has scored in double figures in 3 of 4 NCAA games and in the fourth had nine points. He scored 14 as a freshman against Villanova then nine versus Kansas in the 2013 Second Round loss to the Jayhawks. Last season, Paige posted 19 points in each of the two games UNC played.

Kennedy Meeks also had a nice two game stint in last season tournament. Meeks, for his NCAA career is averaging 13.5 ppg and 9.0 rebounds per game. It helps that the two teams UNC faced last season, Providence and Iowa State had almost no interior presence.

Both Nate Britt and J.P. Tokoto haven't been factors in their games despite averaging double-digit minutes. In Tokoto's case, he saw very little action in 2013 but played as a starter in 2014. Britt came off the bench more in 2014 than even this season.

The one caveat here is Brice Johnson was injured after playing two minutes versus Iowa State last season. Johnson would have certainly produced against the Cyclones much the same way Meeks did. Johnson did score 16 points against Providence in UNC's 2014 first round win.

In short, UNC has plenty of experience just not as much in the NCAA Tournament. UNC has not seen the Sweet Sixteen since 2012 with Simmons and White as the only players on the roster to see the Tar Heels escape the first weekend. Paige said today this was something they would very much like to change.
