Following the court decision on Thursday to defer two misdemeanor charges on Thursday, senior cornerback Malik Simmons will be suspended for the first two games of the 2015 season UNC has announced.

Via press release:

North Carolina senior cornerback Malik Simmons has been suspended for the first two games of the 2015 season following the adjudication of two misdemeanor court cases in Orange County Thursday morning.

“Malik’s actions did not meet the standards of the Carolina football program and he will serve a significant penalty as a result,” said head coach Larry Fedora.  “I’m confident he will learn from it and we can put these issues in the past.”

Simmons will continue to practice with the team and will be eligible to play in his first game against Illinois on September 19.

Simmons will miss the season opener in Charlotte versus South Carolina and the home opener against North Carolina A&T the next week.

Simmons was cited in May for possession of marijuana then detained in July for resisting arrest. Both charges were deferred while Simmons performs community service, apologizes to the officer and pays court costs. Following the arrest, Simmons was initially suspended but then reinstated on the opening day of training camp.
