Game Recap

So the commentary on this will be fairly limited because McNeese State was not exactly a challenging opponent. Five Tar Heels scored in double figures with P.J. Hairston leading the way 20 points. Hairston hit three 3-pointers but also got to the line eight times. That is probably the more important aspect of what he did today since Hairston is more effective is he can mix in drives to the basket with his three point shooting. Reggie Bullock hit five threes to end up with 17 points. James Michael McAdoo had 12 points, Leslie McDonald 11 and Brice Johnson 10 to round out the bulk of the scoring. Marcus Paige had nine assists on the day versus zero turnovers in one of his better games of the season running the point.

UNC was red-hot from three point range hitting 13-28 which was nice except it is not something seen out of this team unless a vastly inferior opponent is on the floor. The interior offense was decent with McAdoo doing some back-to-the-basket work but largely UNC shot threes because they were available and going down. It is also because this team is not built with a strong interior game and will be more dependent on the three than any team in the Roy Williams' era. That probably means they will be very good in home games and struggle some on the road.

Basically UNC didn't make things worse with this game. The offense was well executed for the most part but playing a bad defense is very helpful there. McNeese State is so sub-par on the offensive end, the defense isn't worth talking about. The real test comes next Saturday with UNLV comes to town. Can UNC hit threes against a quality team? Can UNC execute on both ends against a probable NCAA Tournament team? The manner in which those questions get answered next week will reveal something about how the rest of the season may go.
