Ohio State at USC Headlines a Saturday Full of Ranked Showdowns

Saturday is a college football Saturday, all 103 games of it, and the nightcap is the one everyone will be watching. Ohio State at USC, 7:30 PM ET: the GameSim projection has the top-ranked Buckeyes 32.8, the Trojans 27.2, a 5.6-point road call across 740 simulations. The No. 1 team in the country, on the road, in prime time, in the Coliseum.

Ohio State

My take: a road favorite of nearly six points against USC is the sims saying Ohio State's ranking is not a reputation, it is a gap. The Trojans at home are supposed to be the great equalizer, and the model is not buying it. If you think USC's home field and its offense can drag this into a fourth-quarter game, this is the number to argue with. If you think the Buckeyes are simply the best team in the country, GameSim just handed you the receipt.

The rivalry game: Florida at Georgia, with the Cocktail Party stakes intact

Before the nightcap, the afternoon belongs to Jacksonville. Florida at Georgia, 3:30 PM ET: the GameSim projection has the No. 2 Bulldogs 36.0, the No. 25 Gators 26.6, a 9.4-point home call across 800 simulations. This rivalry does not need ranked teams to matter, but it has them anyway.

My take: nine-plus points in a rivalry game is the sims telling you this one is not about the jerseys, it is about the rosters. Georgia at home, with a top-two ranking on the line, is the kind of spot where the model expects the favorite to play like the favorite. Florida's path is the one every underdog dreams about, a fast start and a crowd that goes quiet. The sims are skeptical, and that skepticism is the story.

Two ranked games the sims basically call a tie

The best drama on the card might be the two games the model cannot separate. Wisconsin at Iowa, noon ET: Iowa 21.2, Wisconsin 21.1, a margin of one-tenth of a point across 860 simulations between the No. 15 Hawkeyes and the No. 22 Badgers. That is not a lean, that is a coin flip wearing a box score.

Then, at 4:15 PM ET, South Carolina at Oklahoma: Oklahoma 27.9, South Carolina 26.6, a 1.3-point home edge for the No. 13 Sooners over the No. 18 Gamecocks across 800 simulations. My take: when two ranked matchups land inside a field goal, the card is begging you to watch the fourth quarter, not the pregame show. These are the games where one turnover, one special teams play, one bad bounce decides it, and the sims are honest enough to say so.

The rest of the ranked card: big favorites, and one upset call

Elsewhere, the sims are far less shy. Minnesota at Indiana: the No. 3 Hoosiers 34.5, Minnesota 17.8, a 16.7-point home call. Stanford at Louisville: the No. 9 Cardinals 51.7, Stanford 15.9, the widest margin on the ranked card. Nevada at UCLA: the No. 7 Bruins 47.0, Nevada 9.3. Arizona State at BYU: the No. 10 Cougars 37.4, Arizona State 20.2. Kansas at TCU: the No. 14 Horned Frogs 29.8, Kansas 21.9. Virginia at Wake Forest: the No. 8 Demon Deacons 29.4, Virginia 19.0.

The night games keep the chalk rolling. Miami at UNC: the No. 5 Hurricanes 35.8, North Carolina 25.5. Mississippi State at Texas: the No. 6 Longhorns 31.5, Mississippi State 21.6. Missouri at Arkansas: the No. 19 Tigers 30.4, Arkansas 21.1. Oklahoma State at Iowa State: the No. 20 Cowboys 39.6, Iowa State 28.1.

And then there is the upset call. SMU at Syracuse, noon ET: Syracuse 34.1, the No. 16 Mustangs 25.6, an 8.5-point home call for the unranked Orange across 860 simulations. My take: that is the number on the card most likely to make a ranked team's fan base angry, and the one most worth watching at noon. The rest of the ranked road favorites mostly hold serve: Notre Dame at Navy, the No. 12 Irish 29.7, Navy 23.0; Michigan at Rutgers, the No. 17 Wolverines 24.7, Rutgers 20.2; and Auburn at Ole Miss, Ole Miss 32.8, the No. 24 Tigers 25.2.

The report card: 7-for-18 on yesterday's featured card, with two scores nailed cold

State it plainly first: yesterday's featured card went 7-for-18 on called winners, graded on the final sim batch, and the headliner flipped. Golden State beat the Lakers 112-95 after the sims had Los Angeles by more than seven, so the GameSim line took its lumps on the marquee game. The misses were real, and they deserve to be named: Orlando beat Toronto 121-114 to flip the 18-point home call, Dallas beat Houston 116-111, Philadelphia beat New York 98-93, Denver beat Phoenix 127-120, Baylor routed UCF 41-9 to flip a double-digit home call, Sacramento State beat Kent State 31-10, Dartmouth beat Harvard 24-14, Calgary beat Seattle 6-2, and Florida beat Winnipeg 5-2.

But the good news is real too, and it is worth naming just as plainly. Boston beat Chicago 125-111 against a projected 124.6 for the Celtics, a near-exact team score, and Detroit beat Brooklyn 110-94 with Detroit landing on exactly 110 points against a projected 110.2. Minnesota beat the Clippers 127-101 to land the big home call, Washington beat Charlotte 95-79, Miami beat Indiana 145-125, Tulane beat Charlotte 38-31, and New Jersey beat Vegas 5-2. The NBA card split 5-5, college went 1-4, and the ice went 1-3, which is a rough night on winners, but two team scores nailed almost exactly and three big home calls landing is the kind of thing that keeps the model honest. Seven winners right, eleven wrong, a flipped headliner, and projected scores that were dead on where it counted.

GameSim line: Ohio State by nearly six at USC, Georgia by more than nine over Florida, and the two ranked coin flips, Wisconsin at Iowa and South Carolina at Oklahoma, coming down to the fourth quarter.

All scores above are MyGameSim projections from the simulations run so far, and none of the games today have been played yet. Yesterday the featured calls went 7-for-18 on winners, with two team scores nailed almost exactly. Run your own sims, check the totals and projected stats, and tell me where the model is wrong today.
