The sophomore point will apply for a medical redshirt.

Syracuse basketball sophomore point guard Howard Washington will seek a medical redshirt for the 2018-19 season. Washington has not played in Syracuse’s last seven games. When asked whether he would seek a medical redshirt after the Arkansas State game, both he and Jim Boeheim confirmed that would be the plan moving forward.

“That’s going to be my route I’m going to take this year. Coach (Boeheim) thinks it’s the best decision possible. Just give me another year, a full year to get back,” Washington said in the post-game locker room.

Washington tore his ACL and partially tore his MCL in practice last January. He missed the remainder of the 2017-18 basketball season but returned for Syracuse this fall after being cleared to play.

“I work hard on everything I do so, I knew I had to work my butt off to get back to where I am now,’ He said. “I’m going to keep working harder and show the work was worth it.”

Players seeking to apply for a medical redshirt in college basketball cannot play in more than 30 percent of the team’s games. Washington has already met that qualification given he’s only played in three games this season against Eastern Washington, Oregon and Colgate. He has not played since the Colgate game on November 21.

“It’s all positive going into this decision. Like I said it’ll get me more time to get me back to where I was at, get better. It gives me two years under coach knowing what he expects, knowing the defense, knowing whatever it may be, just experience and learning. So I’ll basically be a junior with three years of eligibility left,” He finished.
