Syracuse Football: Senior Ashton Broyld Dismissed From Team

It seems as though the disappointing career of the Rochester native has come to a disappointing end.

Ashton Broyld won't get the chance to make good on the expectations that followed him to Syracuse four years ago. The senior hybrid has been dismissed from the Syracuse Orange football team for a violation of team policy.

It puts a disappointing end of what's been a disappointing career for a guy expected to be Syracuse's next big thing.

Broyld almost never made it to Syracuse. He was suspended during his senior year of high school for making inappropriate gestures during a basketball game. After a year at Milford Academy, Doug Marrone brought the highly-coveted, four-star recruit (then a QB) to SU anyway. However, he was soon moved from QB to RB, then WR, then back to RB and then on to some kind of mixture in-between.

His best season was 2013 when the then-sophomore caught 52 passes for 452 yards, both of which led the team. His junior season was sidelined by injuries and caught 15 passes for 174 yards in five games. He ends his Syracuse career with one touchdown, scored during his freshman season.

If you want to read between the lines, it sounds as though Broyld was under some kind of double-secret probation this year:

He came into his senior season with hopes of getting back to form but was also listed third on the depth chart at the Hybrid position. Tyrone Perkins will take his spot for now behind Ben Lewis and Ervin Phillips.

The good news for Syracuse is that they've got depth here, so the loss of Broyld doesn't have the impact it would have seemed to have a couple years ago. That's also the bad news because it means Broyld's career will go down in the SU history books as a real disappointment.

So it goes.
