Syracuse eyeing postseason bowl appearance after win over Boston College

At 4-4, SU suddenly has the postseason in their sights again.

The Syracuse Orange beat the rival Boston College Eagles 28-20 yesterday, pulling their W-L record up to an even 4-4 going into the bye week. With the victory, even more college football experts are starting to come around on the Orange, and their potential postseason chances.

Of the outlets that typically roll out bowl projections following each week’s action, only CBS and College Football News failed to include Syracuse in Sunday’s write-ups. Elsewhere, thoughts varied on where SU could potentially be playing:

ESPN’s ACC Blog

The Orange make their first appearance here since week two or so. SU is one of 11 conference team the blog projects to go to the postseason. They see Syracuse in the Quick Lane Bowl against opponent TBD (probably a Big Ten team).

Mark Schlabach and Brett McMurphy each provide their own predictions each week, and sometimes they end up seeing similar outcomes for teams. That was the case for SU this week, as both have them playing in the Camping World Independence Bowl. Schlabach says they’ll face SMU (fresh off an upset of Houston this Saturday), while McMurphy says Ohio.

Jason Kirk’s been a believer in the Orange’s postseason chances for weeks now, and that continues here. He has them in the Quick Lane Bowl against Northwestern. That should revive some unfortunate memories about a certain game in 2012, as well as some douchey journalism school mudslinging before the game (which I will gladly participate in).

Campus Insiders

SU’s last bowl appearance was in Texas, and if Campus Insiders is right, the next one could be as well. They see Syracuse being invited to the Heart of Dallas Bowl to play against Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles are a good team, with a close-ish fan base, which could make for a one-sided collection of supporters at the game.

Still plenty of season left to go for the Orange as they fight for their first bowl game since 2013. As mentioned, Syracuse has a bye week this coming Saturday, before a tough four-game stretch to end the year. They’re on the road vs. Clemson to start November, then host NC State and Florida State before closing at Pitt. They’ll need at least one more win if they have any shot at getting a bowl invite.
