Syracuse could be without Matthew Moyer for 'a while'

God speed, Matt.

In Syracuse’s win against Boston College last week at the Carrier Dome, freshman forward Matthew Moyer went down with an injury just minutes into the game. He landed awkwardly on his left ankle as he corralled a rebound and immediately fell to the floor. Moyer spent the rest of the game on the sideline and wouldn’t return the to floor.

What was though to be just a run-of-the-mill ankle sprain appears to be slightly worse as Moyer traveled with the team but didn’t play in Saturday’s contest against Pittsburgh. He came out in a walking boot and remained on the sideline until the final whistle.

After the game, Jim Boeheim had said that Syracuse could be without Moyer for a bit, perhaps even Saturday as the nation’s No. 2 team in Virginia comes to the Carrier Dome.

“No I don’t think so,” Boeheim said when asked of Moyer. “He’s out for a while.”

While that opaque statement doesn’t give us a timetable or an expected return date, it sounds like Moyer won’t suit up Wednesday against Georgia Tech.

Moyer is averaging 4.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 55.1 percent from the field.

On the positive side, Syracuse got nice production from its bench on Saturday while Moyer’s replacement, Marek Dolezaj, has looked solid in his last two outings. Dolezaj gives Syracuse solid play from the high post when opposing teams play zone.

“We only have seven guys, so we’re not, we know that coming in,” Boeheim said. “We played seven the last game for just about the whole game. You only need five if everybody is healthy. You can get by.”

Just when you thought the Syracuse rotation couldn’t get any shorter...
