Recruiting: 6-9 PF Robert Braswell commits to Syracuse

Some good news on the recruiting front!

The Syracuse Orange basketball program has been looking for another forward to replace Darius Bazley in the 2018 class. On Sunday, they got one in the form of Robert Braswell, according to 247Sports’ Evan Daniels.

The 6-foot-9 power forward from Blythewood High School in South Carolina explained the decision to Daniels:

“Syracuse because it’s a great place. It’s a great family. Almost all the coaches have played for coach [Jim] Boeheim, so it has a really good family feeling. They have a great team and a great campus. I think it’s an all around good place.”

Braswell selected Syracuse over UMass and Oklahoma State -- and Syracuse was actually his most recent offer. He visited campus shortly thereafter, and was apparently sold on the program. 247Sports ranks him the 170th-best player in the class of 2018, though he’s also a late-bloomer having experienced a big growth spurt between his freshman and senior seasons. His ball-handling skills are more like a guard’s than a forward’s, which gives him a different approach to the game than most big men. Braswell would be a project of sorts and a long-term depth add for SU. Still, he could see some time this year to help out a short rotation in the frontcourt that currently consists of just four players for the Orange.

With the 2018 class now locked in at three players once again (the others being Buddy Boeheim and Jalen Carey), Syracuse is at least on a bit firmer ground, no matter the decision Tyus Battle makes on the NBA Draft. As mentioned, Braswell won’t be a game-changer early on, but his addition is still a big plus for a forward rotation that was a bit short-staffed for all of 2017-18.

Congrats to Robert on the decision, and welcome to SU! Highlights below.
