The Fighting Irish ran away with it in the second half, blowing the Florida State Seminoles out to win their second in a row

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish basketball team won its second game in a row this afternoon, defeating the Florida State Seminoles 84 to 69 at Purcell Pavilion.

The Irish got off to a small, scorching start, with Matt Farrell draining a three pointer just seconds into the game and then Rex Pflueger following that up with one of his own on the next possession, giving the Irish a 6-0 lead to start things off and get the crowd into it. The Irish would go up 12-4 before the Seminoles finally got things going, hitting some deep balls and going on a 9-0 run of their own to take a 13-12 lead.

The Irish took off on another run, though, outscoring FSU 16-6 over the next few minutes to get the crowd at Purcell going wild and to take back control of the game, 28-19.

The Seminoles wouldn’t go away easily, though, responding with some buckets in transition and some solid Christ Koumadje jump hooks to narrow the score to 32-28. The Irish staved off the FSU run, though, and went into halftime leading 40 to 34.

The second half saw the first few minutes go about the same, as the Irish led 45-41 about 4 minutes in. From there, the two teams traded baskets for a bit, before Florida State finally managed to tie it up at 52 with just over 10 minutes remaining, and again at 56-56 a couple minutes later.

The Irish got a little separation thanks to some baskets from Geben and a foul drawn on a three by TJ Gibbs, who knocked down all three shots from the charity stripe. The Irish led by 5 with just over 6 minutes to play.

At that point, TJ Gibbs buried a deep-ish 3, and the Irish forced another Seminole turnover on the other end, bringing the Purcell crowd to their feet. This was the momentum that Notre Dame needed, and ND proceeded to build on that 5-0 run and make it a 24-4 run capped by an absolutely, absurdly deep 3 by Matt Farrell. CJ Walker finally ended the run with a 3, but the damage had been done, as the Irish led 80-63 with 1:18 remaining.

The Irish finished out the final minute and won 84 to 69 to improve to 15-10 overall and 5-7 in the ACC. Matt Farrell led the way with 28 points on 6-of-10 shooting from deep, and also added 5 assists. Rex Pflueger contributed 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, and TJ Gibbs scored 19. The Irish shot 49% from the field and 39% from deep while hitting X-of-X free throws.

Florida State was led by CJ Walker’s 16 points, PJ Savoy’s 11, and Phil Cofer’s 12. The Seminoles shot 41% from the field and 35% from deep. The Seminoles fall to 17-8 overall and 6-7 in the ACC.

ND plays next at North Carolina on Monday night in what could be a buzz saw for some nice momentum from the Irish, as the Tar Heels are playing great great basketball of late.
