Inside Carolina: Renner Out For Season With Shoulder Injury

Inside Carolina is reporting that senior QB Bryn Renner will miss the remainder of the season after injuring his shoulder against NC State in Saturday's 27-19 win over the Wolfpack. UNC has yet to confirm this news but likely will at some point in the near future.

Late in the third quarter, Renner was hit by two Wolfpack players after he slid following a scramble out of the pocket. He immediately signaled for the trainers motioning to his left shoulder. It was clear Renner's left arm was hanging awkwardly and he was in significant pain. The trainers worked on Renner and he would later return to the game in the fourth quarter.

According to Inside Carolina, Renner said afterwards the shoulder did indeed "pop out" and he thought it would be fine noting the same thing had happened to him in high school. Further tests of the shoulder have apparently shown additional damage. Since Renner has aspirations to play in the NFL, ending the season now and taking the necessary steps to be ready for the NFL Combine makes sense.

Renner concludes his UNC career third all-time in passing with 8221 yards and second in career touchdown passes with 64. Renner previously set records for most TD passes in a single season with 26 and one year later broke that record by throwing for 28 scores in 2012. Renner has the 2nd and 3rd most prolific passing seasons in UNC history and is the only Tar Heel quarterback to throw for over 3000 yards in back-to-back season.

More importantly than the records is Renner's willingness to stick with a program that was under NCAA investigation and ultimately received a post-season ban. He also has been a stand-up individual and consummate team player through this season when the coaching staff opted to give Marquise Williams more snaps in an effort to boost a struggling offense.

With Renner's season at an end, the Marquise Williams era begins in earnest with UNC needing three wins in their last four games to qualify for a bowl game. Williams expressed his appreciation for Renner on via Twitter.
