Charges Against PJ Hairston Dismissed

Inside Carolina is reporting that the charges against P.J. Hairston arising from his arrest on June 5th for possession of marijuana and driving without a license has been dismissed.

Hairston was arrested last month during a license checkpoint while driving a rented 2013 GMC Yukon. The UNC junior guard and his passengers, Miykael Faulcon and Carlos Sanford, were all charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Hairston was also charged with driving without a license.

Those charges were dismissed on July 19. According to court records, Hairston obtained and completed a drug assessment and the state decided not to proceed based on those actions.

Someone with more legal knowledge than I can expound upon this but it sounds as though Hairston passed a drug test and as such the Durham D.A. decided not to pursue the matter further. The license matter is easily resolved by Hairston simply producing one.

With the dismissal of charges, the legal angle on Hairston's situation is closed and the decision by UNC and Roy Williams to refrain from action looks like the smart move. There was much clamoring for UNC to suspend Hairston(which would have been pointless at this time of year) or to address the issues publicly. As it turns out, it was not necessary to do that for the legal side of Hairston's troubles.

Now attention turns fully to any possible NCAA violations that might crop up from Hairston having been discovered behind the wheel of two rental cars in a two month span. Given the nature of the legal charges, that was always going to be the bigger fish to fry and now it is the only one.
