Will's World: The Uniform Craze and Why It Doesn't Matter To Us

Over the past few years, we've seen a new craze in college football. I'm not talking about the fast, up tempo offenses, although that is a recent craze in college football. I'm referring to the new uniform craze that's swept the world of college football. It started with Oregon, then it swept to Maryland. And now the craze is starting to take over the ACC, with Florida State, NC State, Miami, and Syracuse announcing more uniforms for the upcoming season.

I understand the angst about these uniforms from the fans. We're used to the traditional home and road uniforms every week. A lot of us probably think these new uniforms are ugly, and in most instances, I agree, except for the NC State ones. I'm a big fan of those. But we all need to come to the realization that the new uniform craze isn't for the fans. It's for the players and the recruits interested in these schools. To the players, it's an opportunity to model different uniforms on the field, even if it means looking like horse racing jockeys, like some of Maryland's uniforms tended to do.

If you have twitter, go back and read some of the players and recruits timelines around the time schools unveiled the new uniforms. Very rarely (if at all) will you find a negative tweet from a player or recruit about the uniforms. It's indirect recruiting material by the teams. Just keep that in mind next time you hear a school announcing new uniforms.
