October’s early-season slate brings three intriguing NHL matchups, each with a different kind of tension: a close model call between two Western Conference teams, a road underdog with a notable edge in Tampa, and a Metropolitan Division meeting where the records tilt toward New York.

Utah and Edmonton: a narrow call in the West
The Utah Mammoth arrive at the Edmonton Oilers with a 5-2 record, just behind Edmonton’s 5-1 start. The market lists the Oilers as the favorite, but GameSim sees almost nothing between these same-conference opponents: its 140 simulations give Utah a 51% win probability and project a 3.9-3.7 Mammoth edge. That slim margin makes this the slate’s most finely balanced prediction.
Edmonton’s attack has the familiar creative engine in Connor McDavid, projected for 1.8 assists and 2.0 points. Evan Bouchard is another name to watch, with a projection of 1.1 goals, while Utah’s Clayton Keller is forecast for 1.1 assists. Nick Schmaltz is projected to score once, giving the Mammoth a potential finishing threat of their own. With a 6.5 Vegas total, the matchup carries the promise of a lively night without making either side’s path feel certain. Explore the Utah-Edmonton prediction.
Seattle takes its road test in Tampa
The Seattle Kraken have opened 5-2 and travel across conferences to meet the 4-2 Tampa Bay Lightning. Tampa is the market favorite, yet GameSim projects Seattle to win 4.0-2.5 and assigns the Kraken a 60% chance across 140 simulations. It’s a striking contrast between the listed favorite and the model’s lean toward the visitors.
Seattle’s projected contributors include Ryan Winterton, forecast for 1.1 assists, and Jared McCann, whose projection combines 0.4 goals with 0.5 assists. Tampa has plenty of playmaking in its own projections: Nikita Kucherov is at 0.8 assists, while Brandon Hagel is projected for 0.6 goals and 0.5 assists. The 6.5 total gives both offenses room to shape the story. See the Seattle-Tampa Bay prediction.
Rangers bring the stronger record into a division matchup
In the Metropolitan Division, the New York Rangers (6-2) visit the New Jersey Devils (3-3). GameSim projects a 3.2-1.8 Rangers win, with New York at 60% in its 140-run simulation set. Adam Fox is projected for 0.9 assists, while Mika Zibanejad’s 0.4-goal, 0.5-assist line points to a possible two-way influence. Jesper Bratt leads the Devils’ listed projections at 0.7 points, so New Jersey will look to turn its home setting into an answer to New York’s stronger start. Check the Rangers-Devils prediction.
