Wake Forest Forward Donovan Mitchell to Transfer

Mitchell was granted his release by Coach Danny Manning yesterday afternoon

Wake Forest basketball sophomore forward Donovan Mitchell will transfer from the school and look to finish his collegiate career elsewhere.

Mitchell, a 6-8 sophomore forward from Clovis, California came off the bench in 30 games this season and averaged 2.9 points and 2.2 rebounds in 11.3 minutes per game.

He shot 48% from the field on 64 attempts and 43% from 3 on 35 attempts. He was also 77% from the free throw line going 10-13.

Mitchell’s career high of 10 points came in a game early in the season against UNCG where he went 3-3 from beyond the arc in just 9 minutes of action.

Donovan seemed to have really settled into a role with the team as a high-energy three point shooter and defensive specialist, primarily serving as a backup at power forward to Terrence Thompson.

With two 6-8 forwards and top 75 recruits coming in next year in Jaylen Hoard and Isaiah Mucius, some have speculated that Mitchell would have lost playing time with such highly touted talent coming in.

But with his ability to stretch the floor Mitchell would have fit in well with Danny Manning’s plan to move more towards positionless basketball.

He never seemed to really get the chance to prove himself, as he was rarely on the court for extended stretches.
