Wake Forest Defeats Gardner-Webb 23-7

Hour-long rain delay doesn't stop the Deacs from picking up their first win of 2014.

A little lightning and a lot of rain couldn’t dampen the Wake Forest football team as they put in a much improved performance to beat Gardner-Webb 23-7 on Saturday, Sept. 6.  The first Deacon win of 2014 was marked by a strong defensive effort, with five sacks and 45 total tackles against the Bulldogs.

Increased protection from the offensive line allowed quarterback John Wolford to have more time to act and the true freshman went 30-38 for 291 passing yards and two touchdowns, as well as 29 rushing yards. Wolford hit a number of receivers well - in particular wide receiver E.J. Scott who caught both touchdown passes and had a team-leading 62 receiving yards, tied with tight end Cam Serigne. Despite a number of problems in the red zone – several drops, interceptions, turnovers and penalties – that prevented Wake from truly shining in the end zone, the Deacs continued to push and make a effort to score, thanks in large part to Mike Weaver's three field goals in the first half.

With that all-important first win under their belts, the Deacs are taking little time to celebrate before jumping back into preparations for their next matchup at Utah State on Saturday, Sept. 13.
