Avenging last year’s loss to Old Dominion, the Hokies showed they are on the right path toward a successful season. Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer delivered a career-best performance against the Monarchs, completing 31 of 42 passes for 327 yards and two touchdowns, both to his reliable tight end target, Luke Reynolds. Virginia Tech’s defense did its part as well, recording seven sacks and adding a defensive touchdown off a turnover. The Hokies dominated the Monarchs 44–21, getting new head coach James Franklin off to a positive start in his first season leading the Hokies.
