The Heisman Race Is Wide Open, and Saturday Might Ruin Someone's Weekend

If you were hoping the Heisman race would politely sort itself out by November, college football has other plans. The board is a mess in the best way, the national media cannot agree on a favorite, and one big Saturday slate could shove somebody into New York while sending somebody else into the "what if" pile.

Mensah

That is not hype. That is what the numbers and the odds are actually saying.

The board, without the spin

As of Nov. 4, FanDuel's Heisman odds (via FOX Sports) had Ohio State wideout Jeremiah Smith at +160 and Miami quarterback Darian Mensah right behind him at +165. Notre Dame's CJ Carr sat at +550, with Ole Miss dual-threat Trinidad Chambliss at +950. Miami receiver Malachi Toney, who had been living in the top three, dropped off the board after ESPN's Pete Thamel reported a high-ankle sprain that will require surgery.

CBS Sports has been tracking this carousel all season. Smith rocketed up the board after his four-touchdown torch job on Illinois earlier in the year, and the network has repeatedly noted how rare it is for a true receiver to sit atop the market. Receivers do not win this thing often. DeVonta Smith in 2020 is the recent exception that proves the rule. So if Jeremiah Smith is still breathing at the top of the odds in November, that alone tells you how ridiculous his tape has been.

Put the resumes side by side

ESPN's season lines make the top of the race look less like a coronation and more like a group project gone chaotic:

  • Darian Mensah, Miami: 2,425 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, 1 interception, 80.7% completions, 90.3 QBR. The Canes are 8-0.
  • Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State: 62 catches, 1,067 yards, 13 touchdowns, 17.2 yards per catch. The Buckeyes are 6-2.
  • CJ Carr, Notre Dame: Extremely clean football. FOX Sports had him at 18 touchdown passes and 1 interception on 222 attempts entering this week, with a long interception-free streak that voters notice.
  • Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss: 2,189 passing yards, 18 passing scores, 8 interceptions per ESPN, plus the dual-threat juice that keeps showing up in big spots. The Rebels are 6-2.

Mensah's efficiency is absurd. A 25-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio will get your name in every Heisman sentence that starts with "if the voters just looked at..." Smith's scoring rate is equally absurd for a wideout: 13 touchdowns through eight games is finalist territory even before you stack his career Big Ten receiving-touchdown record on top of it.

Carr's case is the tidy one. Low picks, winning football, and a stage this weekend that could rewrite the odds overnight. Chambliss is the chaos agent. More turnovers than the other quarterbacks on this list, sure, but also more created explosives and a tougher path on the schedule.

What our team metrics say (no conference cheerleading)

Strip away the TV graphics and look at the team context around these four. Through eight games in our database:

  • Miami: 8-0, offense humming at 134.0 efficiency and 10.29 yards per pass attempt, strength of schedule around .546.
  • Ohio State: 6-2, best defensive efficiency of the group at 78.5, pass attack still at 10.09 yards per attempt, SOS around .583.
  • Notre Dame: 7-1 with a sharp defense (82.3), but the softest strength of schedule in this foursome at roughly .251. That matters if you are grading resumes, not vibes.
  • Ole Miss: 6-2 with the toughest SOS of the bunch at about .597. The offense is less efficient on paper than Miami or Ohio State, which is exactly why Chambliss has had to do more of the dirty work.

That is the unbiased read. Miami has the cleanest team resume. Ohio State has the stingiest defense around its star. Notre Dame's record looks shiny until you check who they have played. Ole Miss has fought uphill against better opposition and still sits in the conversation. Conference logos do not change those facts.

Saturday is the plot twist machine

Three games can rearrange this whole thing:

  • Notre Dame hosts Miami on Saturday night. Our board has the Irish around a 5.5-point favorite. Mensah without Toney is still scary. Carr at home with the Heisman market watching is a made-for-December scene. Winner climbs. Loser hears about it until Christmas.
  • Ohio State gets Oregon in Columbus. Smith needs volume and splash plays with the Buckeyes' quarterback situation still unsettled. A quiet day against a decent defense is how receiver candidacies die in November.
  • Ole Miss welcomes Georgia, with the Rebels getting a short number at home. If Chambliss authors a signature night against one of the best teams in the country, the +950 price starts looking silly in hindsight.

So who actually has the edge?

If you are drafting a ballot with cold hands, Mensah's efficiency plus Miami's undefeated mark is the safest stack. If you believe in spectacle and scarcity, Smith's receiver-on-top-of-the-odds story is the one CBS Sports has been waving at for weeks. If you think voters reward clean play under bright lights, Carr can leapfrog both with one win over the Canes. If you weight strength of schedule and dual-threat production the way some analytical folks do, Chambliss is not as far outside the frame as the odds claim.

The honest answer: nobody has it locked. ESPN's box scores, CBS Sports' market tracking, and the team metrics all point the same direction. This race is unsettled on purpose. Saturday will not end it, but it might finally make one of these four look inevitable, and turn another into a cautionary tale about peeking at the Heisman odds too early.

Bring popcorn. The stiff-arm is still up for grabs.
