Syracuse men's basketball left out of updated ESPN bracketology

Listen Lunardi, Jim’s not pleased...

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi released his updated NCAA Tournament bracketology picks on Thursday following the Duke Blue Devils’ successful pursuit of center Marvin Bagley. While there’s plenty of ACC stuff we’ll get to in there, it’s worth noting that the Syracuse Orange are once again not included in Lunardi’s bracket. They’re also not among the eight teams just outside the field.

This is fine.

SU’s losing a lot of scoring power with Tyler Lydon and Andrew White III’s departures. And John Gillon, Dajuan Coleman and Tyler Roberson also provide varying levels of production we’ll need to replace. As fans close to the program, we have an idea of how that will occur. But those seeing the team on the surface see quite a few holes to fill (and admittedly, those are there even if you do know the team very well).

So while the Orange aren’t there, several SU opponents are. First, the ACC teams:

Clemson and Georgia Tech were also just on the outside looking in, according to Lunardi.

Additionally, Syracuse faces a few more tournament-type teams in non-conference play this year. The Kansas Jayhawks are a No. 1 seed, while the Maryland Terrapins are projected to be an 11-seed in the First Four. Oakland and Texas Southern are both projected to win their respective leagues. Plus St. Bonaventure and UConn are just on the outside of the field.

Whether Syracuse was in the field or not, that would make for tough sledding. But outside of the tourney scope right now, it’ll require at least a few upsets if the Orange want to get back to March Madness.

And when that happens, Joe’s just a #disloyalidiot, I guess.
