Report: Freshman John Wolford Named Starting Quarterback

Wake Forest has a starting quarterback.

Dan Collins of the Winston-Salem Journal is reporting that freshman quarterback John Wolford has been named the starting quarterback for Wake Forest's season opener against ULM. He will be the first true freshman quarterback at Wake Forest to start the season opener since Mike McGlamry in 1974. Wolford beat out redshirt sophomore Tyler Cameron, redshirt junior Kevin Sousa, and true freshman Travis Smith.

Blogger So Dear speculated last week, based on performance in practice, that John Wolford would be named the starter. Today head coach Dave Clawson told Collins, "John Wolford is going to be our starting quarterback. We made that decision after watching the tape of the scrimmage. Not just in last night's scrimmage, but consistently through camp he has executed our offense at the highest level. And I think he gives us our best opportunity to win football games." As an observer of every practice so far, I 100% agree with Clawson's decision.

Wolford is out of Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville, Florida. During his prep career, he threw for 10,621 yards and 126 touchdowns. In all, he accounted for 13,403 total yards of offense and 162 total touchdowns. He was originally committed to East Carolina, and chose Wake Forest over East Carolina and Penn State.

You can watch Wolford and the rest of the Deacs take on ULM on August 28th at 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
