Jeff Capel announced the sparingly used forward will transfer

Shamiel Stevenson was a small bright spot on last year’s team, and was expected to be a contributor coming into this season under Jeff Capel in his first season as he was the 2nd leading-returing scorer. After a season where he averaged almost 24 minutes a game scoring 8.5 points per game and rebounding 4.4 times per game, he played a total of 32 minutes the entire 2018-2019 season scoring 16 total points and 7 rebounds.

Stevenson’s lack of play was noticed almost immediately by the media, and when questioned about it, Jeff Capel commented that he needs player to play with energy every day. After 11 minutes of play this past saturday, Jeff Capel in a rather dead tone said “He played. He got more time today. We’ll see what happens going forward.” Woof.

Today, Jeff Capel announced Stevenson will be transferring from Pitt and looking for opportunities elsewhere

“We support Shamiel’s decision to continue his academic and athletic career elsewhere,” said head coach Jeff Capel. “We appreciate his efforts with the Pitt Basketball program and wish him well.”

It’s not immediately clear why Stevenson didn’t seem to fit in with what Jeff Capel was trying to accomplish at Pitt so far, but we hope he finds success elsewhere.

Capel now will have five scholarships to fill his team with in the 2019-2020 season. While he has no commits currently, Pitt is heavily involved in a number of players. Jeff Capel will very quickly have a team comprised of mostly his own players.
