Louisville cornerback/return man Jaire Alexander will not play in Friday night's game against Wake Forest, Cardinal head coach Bobby Petrino announced during Wednesday's ACC coaches teleconference. Alexander left U of L's game against Boston College in the 3rd quarter with what appeared to be a leg or ankle injury.

Alexander, a true freshman, has made nine tackles this season and intercepted a pass against Samford. Where he's made his biggest impact, however, has been as Louisville's primary punt returner. So far this season he has returned 14 punts for an average of 5.8 yards with a long of 24.

Redshirt freshman cornerback Cornelius Sturghill took over Alexander's duties last Saturday, returning one punt for two yards.

Petrino also said on Wednesday that true freshman wide receiver Jaylen Smith is still listed as questionable for Friday's game, but did practice on Tuesday. Smith, who is Louisville's second-leading receiver in both receptions (18) and yards (252), left the Boston College game with an upper body injury.
