Here we go.

Via Jeff Greer of the Courier Journal, Louisville is scheduled to meet with Xavier coach Chris Mack for the first time this weekend to discuss the possibility of him becoming the new men’s basketball coach at U of L.

Officials from the University of Louisville are scheduled to meet with Xavier coach Chris Mack for the first time this weekend to discuss the school’s opening for a head men’s basketball coach, a source with knowledge of the interview process told Courier Journal.

Mack has long been considered the top coach on Louisville’s list, and the scheduled meeting is the first sign of the coaching search process taking shape.

On Wednesday, interim Louisville athletics director Vince Tyra dodged a question about the merit of reports that Mack was the top candidate for the job, saying he didn’t think “anything has any merit until we have somebody signed up.”

ESPN’s Jeff Goodman also confirmed that this meeting is set to take place.

Mack has long been considered the favorite to land the Louisville job. The 48-year-old has taken Xavier to the NCAA tournament in eight of his nine seasons on the job, and has been to the tournament’s second weekend in four of those years.

Mack attended high school in Cincinnati and is a Xavier alum. Still, he’s just the 55th highest-paid coach in Division-I right now, and he has a wife who (Have you guys seen this? Have you heard about this?) was born and raised in Louisville. These are just a couple of the many reasons why the U of L job might seem alluring to a man who is having a nice run of success at his alma mater.

More madness in the days to come, I’m sure.
