Kendall Hinton Out For Season, Will Apply For Medical Redshirt

The sophomore quarterback will not play again this season.

Dave Clawson announced during during his weekly press conference that Wake Forest quarterback Kendall Hinton will miss the remainder of the season after tweaking his knee. He initially suffered a sprained MCL against Delaware on September 17th, but has not played since despite initially being given a 2-4 week timetable to return.

Wake Forest will apply for a medical redshirt, and Hinton meets all criteria to receive that redshirt. Hinton was a true sophomore this season, so if he is granted the redshirt, then he will be a redshirt sophomore during the 2017 season.

I don’t want to say that this is the best case scenario, because the best case scenario involves Hinton being healthy, but it’s exciting to hear that Kendall Hinton will probably have an additional year of eligibility. Hinton played a pivotal role in helping defeat Tulane and Duke this season, so he had a major impact “for free.” Wake Forest defeated Virginia 27-20 on Saturday and is now bowl eligible. Because of this, there’s really no reason to rush Hinton back. He attempted just 19 passes this season, but completed 11 for 174 yards (9.2 yards/attempt), and also carried the ball 25 times for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The quarterback situation next year, assuming no attrition, will be: senior John Wolford, redshirt sophomore Kendall Hinton, redshirt sophomore Kyle Kearns, redshirt freshman Jamie Newman, true freshman Taylor Powell, and true freshman Tayvon Bowers. If Hinton is healthy next season, I expect him to be the starter.

What do you all think about the quarterback situation moving forward?
