It’s the debate that promises to take the nation by storm this fall: Is Mitch Trubisky elite?

If you’ve followed NFL Twitter for the past few years, you’re undoubtedly familiar with the “Is Joe Flacco elite?” debate. While it started as an actual discussion between morning talk show hosts following Flacco’s Super Bowl MVP, the debate really took off when internet legend PFT Commenter started leading the charge.

With many fans and pundits predicting a breakout season for Mitch Trubisky, I think it’s clear that Trubisky is poised to become the Joe Flacco of college football. The takes will be hot, the opinions will be difficult to back up with facts, and I want to be on the front lines for all of it. So, let the record show that the “Is Mitch Trubisky elite?” debate was first born on Saturday, July 23rd, 2016, right here on Tar Heel Blog.

A visual representation of Mitch Trubisky's eliteness.
Is Mitch Trubisky elite? You decide.

Here’s my call to you, Tar Heel Bloggians: This season, please join me in bringing the “Is Mitch Trubisky elite?” debate to Sports Twitter. Let’s use every frozen rope to Ryan Switzer — who recently called Trubisky’s arm talent “unique and very rare”… sounds pretty elite to me — as proof for the affirmative, and let’s wildly overreact to every incompletion. After all, Nathan Elliott might be elite, too.

Now, I expect this thing to really take off after Trubisky announces his presence with authority on September 3rd; however, it’s never too early to start the discussion. So, to help kickstart the debate, I’ve compiled a few cherry-picked stats that you’re free to post online, without context (I’ve included the context, but we’ll burn this evidence before the season starts):

  • Mitch Trubisky was 40-47 for 555 Yards, 6 TDs, and 0 INT in 2015. (He was 17-20 for 312 Yards & 4 TDs against Flacco’s FCS Delaware Blue Hens, accounting for a nice chunk of his production.)
  • Mitch Trubisky had a higher QBR in the ACC Championship game (98.5) than presumed Heisman frontrunner Deshaun Watson (77.2). (Trubisky was 1-1 for 16 Yards.)
  • Mitch Trubisky hasn’t thrown an incomplete pass since October 2015. (He was 16-16 for 192 Yards and a TD down the stretch after starting 0-2 vs. Wake Forest.)
  • Mitch Trubisky is undefeated at UNC. (No context necessary; that’s just a fact, Jack.)

There you have it, folks; the “Is Mitch Trubisky elite?” starter kit. Stay tuned throughout training camp for progressively hotter takes, and get ready to bring this fall’s hottest debate to Twitter.com!
