Game Recap

Notre Dame's road trip goes from worrisome to disastrous after getting dominated by a Seminoles team coming off five straight losses.

Here is the ugly truth. In the past month, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (19-9, 10-6) have played in 6 road games. They are 2-4 in those games, including 3 blowout losses. Overall, they will finish the regular season at just 5-5 in true road games and 1-3 on a neutral court.

But even for such a paltry resume away from South Bend, the Irish hit a new low on Saturday afternoon, losing in a completely non-competitive effort to a Florida State Seminoles (17-12, 7-10) team that had just lost five straight games to fall almost completely out of the tournament conversation.

In those six road games over the past month, Notre Dame is averaging just 69 points per game and looks a far cry from the most efficient offense in the country, a title they sacrificed handily following Saturday's effort. More than that, the Irish dropped to 34th in KenPom's overall rankings (from 24th) and went from a possible record-setting offense to 3rd in the country over the course of this bad, bad 3-game road trip.

Simply put, this was a horrible welcoming to the month of March for a program that had seemingly overcome those demons last season. Now, it looks like the Irish peaked a couple of weeks ago or, perhaps, just are not the same team away from home. Either way, that is foreboding for this team's chances in the ACC and NCAA tournaments this time around. Even worse for their chances will be the effects of the last 8 days on their seedings for both tournaments.

It is hard to spin any positives from this or even just to take it in stride. This was the worst performance of the year, and it comes on the heels of a shaky win and an excruciating loss. I can't imagine that anyone at this point is not seriously concerned about this team's postseason potential given how poor they have been 1) these past 8 days and 2) away from home pretty much all season long.

The Irish are very unlikely to grab a double-bye for the ACC Tournament at this point, but to even have a chance, they will need a bounce-back of epic proportions on Wednesday, taking on a Miami team (7pm EST, ESPN2) that has regular season and NCAA 1-seed aspirations. Luckily, Notre Dame is at home next week, with a chance to shape up and finish 2-0 to stay on track for 12 ACC wins.
