TaQuan Marshall and Georgia Tech use an explosive second half to doom the Deacs
Wake Forest was up 21-13 at the half, but the option attack of Georgia Tech wore the Demon Deacons down en route to a victory. With the loss the Deacs fall to 4-3 on the year, while Georgia Tech improves to 4-2.
Georgia Tech took the ball down the field easily in the final 30 seconds of the first half to kick a field goal to cut the lead to 8 going into the break and that continued into the second half as Wake Forest shot itself in the foot over and over again with offensive playcalls and defensive shortcomings.
Freshman QB TaQuon Marshall for Georgia Tech had 23 carries for 163 yards and 2 touchdowns in a very impressive performance.
It’s hard to blame the defense when you know coming into the game that this is how it will go down, but it’s painful to watch your team lose to effectively a thousand paper-cuts in the triple option.
We will have a lot this week on the play calling when we get a better chance to break down what went on in the second half, but the initial thought is to figure out why the heck the Deacs went away from the run when it was so successful in the first half.
I feel like Wake Forest continues to put itself in position to win these games but the play calling continues to show the same old “Little Old Wake Forest” mentality that we have come to know and hate.
For much of the first half I felt like Wake belonged on this stage and was the better team, but it seems like the team lacks that edge to get over the hump.
Cade Carney dominated the first half offensively with 10 carries for 70 yards, but was limited by the coaching staff in the second half, getting 9 carries, but being replaced by Arkeem Byrd and Matt Colburn as starters.
Another frustrating loss and it will put a damper on a fantastic performance by senior defensive end Duke Ejiofor, who had 3 sacks in the first half. His draft stock will continue to rise, but Wake fans will be left again wondering why it continues to fail in high leverage situations.
I don’t have a lot on the game honestly as it was deflating to come up short again in a game that we could have won, and looked for a good bit like we should have won. Much more ahead this week, but as always Proud to Be a Deac.
