Deacs can’t capitalize on late chance that ends up costing them the game.
In a heartbreaker for Deacon fans, Wake Forest fell at home to Florida State 26-19.
FSU’s Ricky Aguayo kicked off the scoring with a career long 51 yard field goal to put the Noles up early 3-0.
Wake’s Mike Weaver answered with a 24 yard field goal later in the quarter, after a fumble by the Seminoles’ George Campbell that was forced by Grant Dawson and recovered by Jaboree Williams.
After a 10 yard punt by Florida State’s Logan Tyler that had a five yard penalty added on for an illegal formation by FSU, Wake Forest started with the ball on the FSU 28. But the Deacs were unable to move the ball, and settled for a 39 field goal by Weaver.
Wake’s next drive went for 8 plays and 81 yards, resulting in a touchdown off of a 3 yard run by John Wolford. Weaver failed to convert the extra point though, leaving Wake with a 12-3 lead.
Keith Gavin then returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards, and Florida State was able to score a touchdown after starting at the Wake Forest 16 yard line.
The next drive ended in an interception thrown by John Wolford that was tipped off the hands of a Wake Forest receiver, and set up a 37 yard field goal for Aguayo that gave FSU a 13-12 lead that it would hold through halftime.
Florida State would add a field goal in the 3rd quarter to stretch the lead to 16-12.
A few plays into the fourth quarter, Matt Colburn II ran in for a 7 yard touchdown to give the Deacs a 19-16 lead after Weaver’s extra point was good this time.
With 6:35 to go, Aguayo converted a 35 yard field goal to tie the game at 19.
After getting down to the Wake Forest 39 yard line, the Noles were forced to punt after Wake’s defense held on 3rd down.
Wake got the ball at its own 10 with 1:23 to go and all three timeouts remaining. After some very questionable play calling by the Wake Forest staff and all three timeouts spent by the Florida State staff, the Seminoles got the ball back on Wake’s 40 with 53 seconds to go.
On the first play of the drive, quarterback James Blackman completed a 40 yard pass to Auden Tate for a touchdown, despite pass interference from Amari Henderson.
Wake had a chance, starting from its own 16 with 36 seconds remaining, but after what seemed like a blatant pass interference that wasn’t called, Wolford was forced to throw up a Hail Mary towards Scotty Washington that fell into the end zone incomplete, ending the game.
Wolford finished the game 24-34 for 271 yards and an interception, along with 19 carries for 63 yards and a touchdown.
Colburn had 5 carries for 13 yards, Arkeem Byrd had 6 for 13 yards, and Greg Dortch had 4 for 7 yards.
Dortch also had 10 receptions for 110 yards. Scotty Washington had 2 for 57 yards, Cam Serigne had 3 for 56, Colburn had 4 for 28, and several others had short receptions.
Chuck Wade and Byrd both fumbled, and Jaboree Williams recovered a fumble for the Deacs.
Jessie Bates III had 14 tackles (8 solo) and 2 passes defended, Grant Dawson had 10 tackles (5 solo), a sack, and a forced fumble, Duke Ejiofor had 8 tackles (6 solo), a sack, and a QB hurry, Wendell Dunn had 7 tackles (4 solo), a sack, and 3 QB hurries, Amari Henderson had 2 pass deflections, and Willie Yarbury added 2 sacks.
Mike Weaver finished 2-2 on field goals and 1-2 on extra points.
Dom Maggio punted 7 times for 273 yards with an average of 39 yards, a long of 44, 1 inside the 20, and 2 touchbacks.
FSU’s James Blackman was 11-21 passing for 121 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked five times for a total of 39 yards lost.
Jacques Patrick had 19 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown, and Cam Akers had 14 rushes for 58 yards.
Auden Tate had 2 receptions for 57 yards and the lone receiving touchdown of the game, Keith Gavin had a reception for 43 yards, and Patrick had 3 for 26 yards, among others.
Ricky Aguayo finished 4-4 on field goals and 2-2 on extra points.
Logan Tyler punted 6 times for 236 yards with an average of 39.3 and a long of 57 with 2 inside the 20.
The crowd of 31,588 was the largest at BB&T Field in several seasons.
