Scott Shafer said that while there's no rush, he expects freshman Eric Dungey to resume practicing "early or midweek"

It's kinda crazy to think that a Syracuse Orange quarterback could throw for three touchdowns against a top-ten SEC team in his first start and all most fans are thinking is, "hopefully we don't have to play him next game." Such is the situation for Zack Mahoney and such is the promise that Eric Dungey possesses.

Dungey's Legend after three games has already become so potent that many SU fans claim the Orange would have beaten the LSU Tigers this past weekend had the true freshman been available to play. Instead, Dungey sat out the game while he recovered from The Dreaded UBI he suffered thanks to a late hit during the Central Michigan game.

Fifth-string walk-on Mahoney acquitted himself just fine in Dungey's absence but there's no denying that the Orange are their best offensively when Eric is at the helm. The upcoming bye week is perfectly timed as it sounds like Dungey will be able to get back into action this week and have extra time to prepare if he's going to re-take the starting quarterback spot for the South Florida game.

"We're hopeful to get Eric back here pretty quick," Shafer said. "We'll follow the whole protocol and make sure he's in good shape, but I can tell you he's doing well. We'll check him again tomorrow."

"Hopefully early or midweek," Shafer said, "but there's no reason to hurry up too much with him."

Much like Dungey, Mahoney worked through initial troubles to find his rhythm and lead the offense into the end zone. If we absolutely have to rely on Mahoney again, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Still...I think we all want to see Dungey get back on track and keep fulfilling the promise he's shown so far. So long as he's healthy and ready.
