Another poorly kept secret has been confirmed.

Former Wake Forest head coach and current ESPN analyst Dino Gaudio will be joining the Louisville basketball staff as Chris Mack’s third assistant.

The long-rumored hiring hasn’t officially been confirmed by U of L, but Gaudio himself confirmed it Friday morning on Twitter.

Like Mack, Gaudio served as an assistant under Skip Prosser at both Xavier (2000-01) and Wake Forest (2001-07). He then took over as the head coach of the Demon Deacons after Prosser died suddenly in July, 2007.

After a disappointing first season, Gaudio won at least 20 games and took Wake Forest to the NCAA tournament in his second and third seasons. Despite that, Gaudio was fired April 7, 2010, primarily because of a 1-5 record in the ACC and NCAA tournaments. The Demon Deacons have made just one NCAA tournament and won no games in the Big Dance since.

Gaudio started covering college basketball for ESPN in 2011 and has been with the network ever since.

In Mike Pegues and Luke Murray, Mack already has a pair of young (40 and 33, respectively) assistants who know the recruiting world, so I like him going with a guy who knows Xs and Os and what it’s like to coach in the ACC. Gaudio has always been kind and insightful when he’s come on the radio show, and word from everyone who knows is that he’s the same way in real life.

Welcome aboard, Dino.
