ACC on notice, North Carolina’s offense explodes against Virginia Tech

People that just don’t want to see what’s there, have questioned UNC’s offense all year. Oh they lost 6 games last year, and it’s semi-sputtered the first two games this year. I’m sure after exploding for 56 points and nearly 700 yards against a Virginia Tech, Tar Heel critics will say it was against a depleted Virginia Tech defense.

In fairness to Virginia Tech there were down multiple defensive backs. That is true, but that doesn’t tell the whole story.

UNC’s offense is loaded, and I mean loaded. Try to convince yourself that it has question marks, but when it executes cleanly like it did against Virginia Tech it’s a scary proposition for the rest of the ACC.

QB Sam Howell is a projected 1st round NFL pick for 2022. WRs Dazz Newsome and Dyami Brown, RBs Michael Carter and Javonte Williams are all considered NFL prospects. This offense has arguably the deepest NFL skill position talent in the ACC. Sure Clemson has Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne. WR Amari Rodgers is a pro-prospect, but they are bit unproven beyond that.

It’s a pick your poison offense. Try to take away the running backs, and you’ll deal with the electric passing game. Gameplan for the passing game, and you have the best 1-2 punch of backs in the ACC.

The latest AP Poll has UNC ranked in the top 5.   Whether you agree with the ranking or not, and I’m not sure I believe UNC is the 5th best team in college football, they are there. It’s a stunning accomplishment for Mack Brown and the Tar Heels to get into that position in such a short period of time since Brown’s arrival less than 2 years ago. Virginia Tech gave the Tar Heels defense a lot of issues dropping 45 points and nearly 500 yards on UNC, but that offense could carry the Tar Heels a long long way.

The Tar Heels have a great chance to be 8-0 when they play Notre Dame on November 27. Fast rising NC State on October 24th could be the Tar Heel’s biggest remaining test before the game with the Irish.

With #2 Alabama and #3 Georgia playing next week, North Carolina could find itself ranked in the top 4 next week.
