Virginia Tech's Caleb Farley out for season with knee injury

Just two days into camp, the Virginia Tech Hokies have lost a contributor to a season-ending injury.

Virginia Tech freshman wide receiver Caleb Farley is out for the season due to a knee injury, Justin Fuente announced on Thursday.

The injury to Farley’s knee, which took place in Tuesday’s practice, was a non-contact injury. While Justin Fuente did not speculate on what the specific injury was to Farley’s knee, there were rumblings around Blacksburg late on Tuesday that Farley may have torn his ACL in the afternoon practice.

Farley was one of a handful of early enrollees this past spring for the Hokies, and saw time at both defensive back and wide receiver throughout spring practice. Ultimately, Farley emerged at the wide receiver position by the spring game, and spent a majority of the exhibition as the number two receiver with the starting offense.

He was poised to be in the mix as a major offensive contributor in his first season with the Hokies this fall. Now that he is out for the season, Farley will take a redshirt and likely undergo surgery and a lengthy rehab process.

The Hokies will now need to look elsewhere for wide receiver production this season, with Phil Patterson, James Clark, and Eric Kumah becoming the three likely candidates to push for playing time opposite of Cam Phillips.

The Hokies have plenty of young depth at receiver, so they should recover, but Farley represented somewhat of a known commodity given how well he performed over the course of the spring.

The offense should be fine, but there is no doubt that Justin Fuente and his staff have their work cut out for them as they look for additional contributors at receiver throughout the rest of fall camp.
