On November 22, 2014, Virginia Tech sat 5-6 after a humbling 6-3 loss to Wake Forest. The Hokies were finished. They were done, the bowl streak likely over, Beamer was toast. There were two things the Hokies could do when faced with their worst season in over 20 years. They could either pack it in, and have everyone question where this program was headed or they could show some pride and remind us they can still play some football in Blacksburg.

VirginiaTech

The Hokie coaching staff and players chose the latter.

Starting with comeback win against Virginia, where the Virginia Tech offensive line played some of their best football of the season, the Hokies offensive line continued their solid play against Cincinnati in a 33-17 win. Virginia Tech ran for well over 200 yards.

The Military Bowl looked like vintage Hokie football, physical on offense, playmaking on defense, and good special teams. It was all there for the Hokies Saturday.

So are things are all bright and rosy in Blacksburg? Not exactly… Virginia Tech football has definitely slipped, but it’s not dead. That’s important to note too. The Hokie football team beat won at Ohio State, in one of the best wins of any team in the country this year. The beat 9 win Duke, and beat a 9 win Cincinnati. There were bright moments Now the Hokies need to build on this finish if they want to return to being among the ACC’s better teams.

Buckey Hodges is a freshman TE with ability. There is talent at RB. The offensive line which has been a weakness for several years, finally showed signs of turning the corner later in the year. You know the defense under Bud Foster will always be solid.

It is wild how the perspective of a season changes with a strong finish. From seemingly a program in complete decline to one where are there are enough signs to think Hokies aren’t not done yet, not by longshot. Now Virginia Tech has to take advantage.

Frank Beamer has to be awfully proud of the fight his team showed at the end of the season.
