The latest Academic Progress Report numbers are out from the NCAA and needless to say there is some concern regarding UNC's football and men's basketball numbers.
On the football side, the multiyear APR is up to 938 from 934. The multiyear average is based on four years of scores. UNC is presently last in the ACC in this number.
Year | Multiyear APR | Single Year APR |
2009-10 | 955 | 949 |
2010-11 | 943 | 895 |
2011-12 | 934 | 933 |
2012-13 | 938 | 971 |
The issue going forward is UNC is must ride out the 895 and 933 especially with the 949 dropping out of the average next year. The 895 from 2010-11 is a direct result of the NCAA scandal which saw multiple players declared ineligible and in all likelihood drop out of classes mid-semester. The threshold for penalties is 930 in the multiyear or 940 for the two year average. UNC would need to post at least a 921 or better to keep the four year number north of that standard.
As for men's basketball, the numbers are a bit dicey also. UNC has dropped to 938 from 959 thanks in part to a pair of low scores in the four year average.
Year | Multiyear APR | Single Year APR |
2009-10 | 985 | 961 |
2010-11 | 963 | 909 |
2011-12 | 959 | 959 |
2012-13 | 938 | 917 |
Like in football, the 2010-11 school year was not kind and provides a number that UNC has to live with for at least one more cycle. The departure of Will Graves prior to the 2010-11 season and Larry Drew during it did serious damage to the APR. UNC rebounded with a 959 the following season but followed that up with a 917 for the 2012-13 season. The result is a 938 over four years which is also last in the ACC.
With the 961 coming off the average next year, UNC will need a strong 2013-14 number to stay ahead of the four year(930) and two year(940) thresholds.
Per UNC's release, other teams had far more success with the APR.
