UNC used a 20-2 run at the end of the half to not only take their first lead in the game, but also grow the lead to 14. The UNC offense, which made 16 3s, was powered by the freshmen Nassir Little and Coby White. White led the Tar Heels with 27 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Little set a new career high with 23 points. For Virginia Tech, Ahmed Hill scored 20 points and Nickeil Alexander-Walker & Kerry Blackshear both added 19 points.
